사대문 밖 마지막 전통 소리 잡가, 무대 위에서 다시 살아나다
‘Japga, the Last Traditional Voice Beyond the City Gates, Revived on Stage!’

’경우소리시리즈‘는 만남과 이별, 연인과의 사랑, 만물의 이치, 자연 탐방 등 시대를 불문하고 인간사의 가장 보편적인 이야기들이 수백 년 동안 서민들에 입과 귀로 재생산되었던 민요에 담겨 있었고, 이를 통해 현대인들과 소통하고 표현하고자 만들어진 프로젝트다.

경우소리시리즈의 세번째 작품 ‘문밖에 잡가雜歌가 있다’는 전통 소리 성황기의 산물, 잡가의 역사를 시사하는 공연이다. 20세기 초, 오늘날 정가로 분류되고 있는 가사, 시조뿐만 아니라 지방 소리, 잡잡가, 12잡가 등 서울, 경기 지방을 총망라하는 ’여러 노래의 모음집‘인 ’잡가‘라는 전통 소리 문화로써 기록되고 형성되었다. 그 소리는 한양 도성 문 안 전문 소리꾼인 가객에 의해 창작, 전수되어 점차 밖으로 퍼져나가 서울과 경기 그리고 한반도 전체에 널리 불린 민속 음악으로 자리매김하였는데 그 당시의 모습을 네 명의 젊은 소리꾼들이 재현하였다.

현재는 민요라는 이름으로 대중들에게 널리 알려져 있지만, 그 뿌리 근간은 전통 잡가에 있음을 시사하고, 우리의 소리가 더욱 단단하게 전승되고 폭넓어지기 위해서는 전통이라는 이름 아래 지금도 끊임없이 그 가치를 다시 한번 되새기는 작업이었다.

공연을 관람한 관객들은 옛 귀명창들이 민요보다 ’잡가‘ 한마디 더 하라고 했던 이유를 들어보니 알 수 있었다며, 잡가의 깊은 매력을 느낄 수 있었다고 평하였고 잡가라는 무거운 주제를 쉽고 재밌게 잘 풀어낸 공연임을 느꼈다고 전했다.

‘Kyoeogwoo sori(song) Series’ is a project created to communicate and express the most common stories of human history in folk songs that have been reproduced by the common people for hundreds of years, such as meeting and separation, love with lovers, the reason of everything, and nature exploration.

The third production in Kyeong-woo Nam’s “Kyeongwoo Sori Series,” Japga lives beyond the city gates(문밖에 잡가雜歌가 있다), explores the history of Japga, a vocal art that flourished during the golden age of traditional Korean song.

In the early 20th century, Japga was recognized as a broad collection of songs encompassing gasa, sijo, regional folk songs, and the twelve Japga pieces — a diverse anthology representing the soundscape of Seoul and the Gyeonggi region. Originating from professional court singers (gagaek) within the capital walls, these songs gradually spread beyond the city gates, evolving into folk music that resonated across Seoul, Gyeonggi, and the entire Korean Peninsula.

In this performance, four young singers reimagine that moment in history, breathing new life into the voices once sung by the masters of the past.

Today, Japga is often overshadowed by the more widely known term minyo (folk song). Yet, its deep roots lie within the Japga tradition — a reminder that to sustain and broaden our musical heritage, we must continually revisit and reaffirm its value.

Audience members shared that they finally understood why the old masters once said, “Sing one more Japga before you sing a folk song.”
They described the performance as both captivating and accessible, offering a fresh and enjoyable way to rediscover the profound beauty of Japga.
