힙한 민요, 현대인의 삶에 흥과 한의 고명을 더하다 !
‘Hip Folk Songs: Seasoning Modern Life with Heung and Han!’

‘고명소리 프로젝트一, 경기소리’ 공연은 격변하는 시대 속 살아남은 한국 민요가 만약 일제강점기도 한국전쟁도 없었다면 어떻게 변화됐을까? 라는 발칙한 상상력에서 시작된 프로젝트이다. 

과거 우리 조상들이 삶의 애환을 노래하던 우리 민요의 틀을 더욱 과감하게 깨 현대인들과 접점을 만들고, 팍팍한 현대 사회 속 한국 사람들에게 잃어버린 한국인의 흥과 한을 다시 불러일으켜 보고자 기획했다. 이러한 노력의 결과를 눈으로 볼 수 있는 공연을 만들었다.

이번 콘서트에서 선보일 8개의 크로스오버 민요는 가야금, 태평소 그리고 현대적인 밴드 사운드와 결합해 전통과 현대의 경계를 허물며 관객들에게 신선함을 선보이며 세대를 아우르는 많은 관객의 반응을 이끌어냈다.

락, R&B, 펑키, 재즈 등 다양한 장르를 통해 ‘고명’ 같은 요소로 한국적 매력을 더하고 현장이 주는 즉흥성과 화려한 리듬을 더해 테크니컬한 국악 밴드의 진수를 보여주었으며, 이듬해인 2025년 3월 고명소리프로젝트에서 실연하였던 6곡을 엄선하여 EP 앨범을 발매하였다.

-공연 곡 목록-

一 핫개구리타령

전설적인 록밴드 레드핫칠리페퍼스의 펑키함을 모티브로 하여

경기 선소리산타령 中 ‘개구리타령’의 능청스러움을 더한 곡이다.

二 그루비흥

민요 ‘천안삼거리’를 재해석한 곡으로, 능수버들의 하늘거리는 형상에

초점을 맞춰 재지하고 그루비한 느낌을 곡에 담아내었다.

三 베틀베틀

경기민요 ‘베틀가’와 휘모리잡가 ‘비단타령’을 재구성한 곡이다.

가야금과 기타의 통통 튀는 주법으로 베틀을 타는 모습을 흥겹게 표현하였다.

四 담바구

‘담바구타령’을 기반으로 한 노래로 담배의 옛말인 담바구를 통해

사람들의 모습을 재미나고 몽롱한 분위기로 풀어내었다.

<Special Stage> 五 CHA-CHA

거문고와 동해안 별신굿 장구, 일렉기타 세 가지 악기를 통해

민요 ‘뱃노래’에 담긴 뱃사람들의 모습과 인생사를 보여준다.

六 별리(別離)

기타와 가야금의 스트링 사운드를 기반으로 경기민요 이별가에

격양되는 감성과 스토리 텔링을 짧고 굵게 구성한 곡이다.

七 창부더락

창부타령의 확장에 초점을 맞춰 실험적으로 구성해 본 곡이다.

기존 가사에 반복적인 후크와 랩형식을 더해 새롭게 편곡하였다.

八 태태평평가가

과거 사람들의 시름을 풀어주었던 태평가에 신나고 빠른 사운드를 더해

현대판 노동요의 콘셉트로 흥겨운 느낌을 잔뜩 담아내었다.

‘Topping Minyo Project I : Gyeonggi Sori’ concert is a daring imagination-driven project that asks: How might the Korean folk songs that survived through turbulent eras have evolved if there had been no Japanese colonial period or Korean War?

The project was conceived to break boldly away from the traditional framework of folk songs—once the outlet for our ancestors’ joys and sorrows—and create a meaningful connection with modern audiences, reigniting the lost exuberance and han (emotional depth) of Koreans in the harsh contemporary world. The result of this effort is a performance you can actually witness.

In this concert, eight crossover folk songs—fusing gayageum, taepyeongso, and modern band sound—blur the line between tradition and modernity, offering audiences a fresh experience and earning enthusiastic responses across generations.

Combining genres like rock, R&B, funk, and jazz, the performance infused “Gomyeong” (ornamental flair, Topping) into Korean charm, added improvisational energy and vibrant rhythms that showcase the technical prowess of a gugak band. In March 2025, Gomyeongsori Project released an EP album, selecting six standout tracks from live performances.

The significance of this work is to realize how beautiful our things, which were embodied in numerous elements of “Korean tradition,” could be if the performance became not just an experience but an experience itself. Many of the audiences who communicated through feedback after the performance evaluated that they were very impressed by experiencing various visual and auditory elements in addition to the song culturally and artistically.

<Performance Setlist>

1. Hot Frog Taryeong
   A track inspired by the legendary rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers’ funkiness, enriching the playful essence of Gaeguri Taryeong from the Gyeonggi Seonsori Santaeryeong.
2. Groovy Heung
   A reinterpretation of the folk song Cheonan Samgeori, focusing on the willow’s swaying form—imbued with a jazzy, groovy vibe.
3. Bettle Bettle
   A recomposition of the Gyeonggi folk Bettlga and the HWIMORI-japga Bidan Taryeong, expressing the joy of weaving a loom, with playful gayageum and guitar techniques.
4. Dambagu
   Based on Dambagu Taryeong, using the archaic word for tobacco, “dambagu,” to portray people in a fun and dreamy atmosphere.

Special Stage – 5. CHA‑CHA
Through geomungo, Donghaean Byeolsingut janggo, and electric guitar, this piece portrays the lives and souls of sailors found in the folk Baetnorae.

6. Byeolli (Parting)
   Centered on the Gyeonggi folk Ibyeolga, this track uses guitar and gayageum strings to deliver intense emotion and storytelling in a concise form.
7. Changbu the Rock
   Experimentally expanding Changbu Taryeong, it adds repetitive hooks and rap elements to the original lyrics, offering a fresh arrangement.
8. Taetaepyeong Pyeongga-ga
   A modern reinterpretation of Taepyeongga, which once eased people’s sorrows—upbeat and fast-paced, styled as a contemporary labor song with a cheerful spirit.
